Every day, our nation's young adults face challenging moments and circumstances, never experienced by the generation before them.
Advancements in technology have made communication, access to information, and even the accomplishment of daily chores, almost instantaneous. As a result, our next generation is not trained in perseverance. They're not accustomed to pains that can't be relieved and problems that can't be corrected, with the click of a button.
Far too often our student and professional athletes find themselves ill-equipped and without the resources they once relied on, to persevere and successfully navigate the ups and downs of the real world once their athletic careers come to an end either by graduation, injury, or being released. After years of pampering and enabling starting as young teenagers surrounded by family, individuals, and institutions who make practically every decision for them, those athletes many times overnight, find themselves feeling abandoned with no resources and no experience to handle being tossed out into real life. And sadly, far too many of our next generation have not developed a spiritual foundation based on Faith and God's incredible Grace to persevere through life's toughest seasons. A solution ... TrueNorth.
Successful athletes are not successful by accident. They have applied a lifetime of hard work, dedication, sweat, and tears to achieve their success. They are the best of the best because they've chosen a commitment to their sport on a daily basis. To perform at an elite level as a player, whether it be in college or as a professional, requires athletes to devote all their time and energy to their sport. It requires an incredible focus on the game while sacrificing everything else to reach the goal of being a Pro. In our culture today, these elite, professional athletes are highly celebrated and highly paid. But what happens when the fame, celebrity status, and the money run out?
To meet graduation requirements, many college athletes pick an easy major or it's chosen for them, not because they are interested in the subject, but because it's easy. In some professional sports leagues, many of the athletes reach the professional level as young as 19 years old, an age that usually doesn't yet have the mature mindset to handle what's to come. Once they get to the league, suddenly large sums of money, fame and lack of scrutiny are thrown their way. In time, they often begin to believe in the perpetuity and invincibility of their success. Often surrounded by super fans, family, friends and even strangers, that reinforce this attitude. Unfortunately, many of these athletes find out the hard way they are not the "best of the best" at the more important things that will sustain them in their "career of life" after professional sports.
Sports Illustrated estimates 78% of NFL players face financial trouble within two years of leaving the game, and another 60% of NBA players are in the same boat five years after retirement. On average, NFL players last 3.3 years in the league, while NHL, NBA and MLB careers last 3.5, 4.8 and 5.6 years, respectively.
Despite these figures and the warnings, too many professional athletes keep running through their fame and their money, often finding themselves released and out of the league, due to injury, or a decrease in performance, and ultimately in a dark and lonely place. The super fans, family, friends and strangers that once reinforced their invincibility attitude, are all gone. And sadly, this dark and lonely place often leads to addiction, mental health issues, anger, and even suicide. That's where TrueNorth can help.
